2024 – SAGA /Inderoy

Maia Torp Neergaard

The process in the dark room is like receiving a letter; a respectful response as I work with the material. My current project explores farming and our connection to the land. Just as farmers cultivate the soil, I work the film by hand.

How does it feel to farm during today’s climate and biodiversity crisis? How are the connections between the land, the people in the countryside, and people who – like me – live in the city? These questions are central to my current project on soil and agriculture, and my time at Saga Photo Centre allowed me to explore them in depth by filming and speaking with local farmers.

Equipped with my Bolex camera, I visited three Norwegian farmers, all working in different ways with the soil and produce in the town of Inderøy, north of Trondheim. Here, I was met with both curiosity and warmth as my camera and I trailed the farmers, learning about their work, their motivations, and their feelings towards the land.

This work is part of a bigger project which includes stories from farmers all over Scandinavia, and which will have its first home at Astrid Noacks Atelier, a Copenhagen exhibition space, in April 2025. The exhibition will present different 16mm film works, plants gathered at the different locations, and letters exchanged between the farmers and myself. The dialogue on our connection to the land that feeds us will continue throughout the exhibition with communal dinners, dialogue meetings and a letter writing workshop.
