Pilot Round Spring 2022 – From Helsinki to Oslo
Patrick Kuoppamäki
The work I had done prior to my residency started with experimenting with building my own light sources. What drew me to trying this method was upon realising that the darkroom timer works with a normal wall-plug and by using this with any light source I am able to precisely expose the paper and thus freeing me from only using photographic enlargers for my work. I am still intrigued by the possibilities the light sensitive materials display.
Mainly done with decorative LED light chains, arranged in any order on some flat material.
During the residency I worked with chains of 480 and 630 individual lights respectively.
The working period in Oslo was vital for the continuation of the process since I had little
to no tools to work with (compared to Helsinki), which resulted in me having to find easier
and better methods of constructing my light sources.
Using several lights, the direction of light that hits the paper comes from various
directions and by using simple arrangements of dodging tools creates an exposure of
how many lights are in the source (for example, one dodging tool creates 480 individual
shadows). Working solely in the darkroom and without conventional photographic
machinery, the process is spatial and the end result is an imprint of a temporary
construction. Cyan darkroom was properly built witch was helpful since all the works I did during the
residency was done inside the darkroom.
Patrick Kuoppamäki (b. 1997) is a Finnish artist working and living in Helsinki. Starting
from photography his working has gravitated towards a more expressive methods of
using photographic material. The work is reminiscent to architecture and installation but
up until this point the work has only been on display in a two dimensional form. His works
have been exhibited in various galleries around Finland and lately in Romania as well.
